If you have any information please contact 087 6788684.

Candle Mass

It is hard to believe that we are already at the final of our special November masses for our dead. It has been lovely to see so many attend the masses and I know Fr. Mick has been delighted with such great numbers. The final of our masses takes place this Wednesday 28th at 7.30pm and this mass is a special candle mass offered especially for all those who died in the past 12 months. It is a beautiful simple ceremony where a family member of each of the deceased is presented with a candle in memory of their loved one. The candle remains lighting on the altar for the duration of the mass and then given to the family to bring home.

Those who were buried in our own local graveyard are automatically included but we also know that many of you have had family members and friends who have died in the past year in other areas and we would like to remember them also during this mass. If you would like their name included please write their name on the list in the main porch of the church or contact myself Linda Spillane on 087 9838392.

GAA AGM

Ballyduff Lower GAA club will hold their AGM on Sunday December 2nd at 2.30pm in Ballyduff Community Centre. All are welcome to come along to the meeting.

Weekly Envelopes
The new packets of the weekly church collection envelopes are now available in the church so if you use the weekly envelopes you can pick up your addressed pack in the church. The weekly collection taken up at the weekend masses is used for the upkeep of our parish church and so is very important to the running of our beautiful church.

Presentation Night

The curtain came down on the girls gaelic football year as they held their medal presentation night. Players and coaches gathered with their families and friends in Ballyduff Community Centre to celebrate a great year of football and a fun and memorable night was had by all.

On hand on the night to present the girls with their medals was Waterford lady footballer Louise Ryan. A big thank you to the businesses who sponsored spot prizes, Kilmeaden Pharmacy, Kilmeaden Takeaway, Countrylife ,Morris’s Builder Providers, Waterford Suir Valley Railway, Dermot O Neill Pharmacy Portlaw and O Donnachas. Huge thanks also to Centra in Kilmeaden who provided the water and crisps on the night and to the great John Hearne who took some fabulous photos during the night.

A big well done and congratulations to all the players and coaches who gave such committment and dedication all year and provided some brilliant entertaining games of ball for their supporters.

Birthday Boy.
We send very warm birthday wishes to well known local man Mossie Power, Ballyduff West who reaches the 90 milestone this week. Mossie has given great service to our parish life over the years and we hope he enjoys a wonderful birthday with Breda and the family.

Home To Rome

Friday November 16th was a very exciting and emotional day for Arthur and Jordan Curry and their family as they presented a cheque to Waterford Hospice following their hugely successful fundraiser. Their brave and adventurous cycle from Ballyduff to Rome was first and foremost a journey taken in memory of a mother and grandmother whose life inspired many, a lady who showed time and time again selflessness and kindness to all around her. Raising money for Waterford Hospice was something the Curry family felt strongly about as a thank you for the help and support they received. I know that Arthur and Jordan were completely overwhelmed by the support they received and by the generosity of everyone and so it was with great pride that they presented a cheque for €20,000 to Mr. Neil O Sullivan from the Waterford Hospice Movement Board of Directors. What a fantastic achievement and Arthur thanked all those who had helped and supported them on their journey and I would urge you all to take a look on the Home to Rome 2018 facebook page and a read of the beautiful words written by Arthur. A big well done again to Arthur and Jordan on a journey taken and conquered. A very special lady beams with pride from her heavenly home.

Community Alert

Our local community alert group held another successful and informative meeting last week. Before the meeting began Noel O Sullivan spoke on behalf of the crowd gathered and asked for a vote of sympathy to be recorded for Albert Kearns on the recent death of his brother Pat and to Garda Alan Kissane on the death of his father.

Guest speaker at the meeting was Chief Fire Officer Niall Curtin who gave a very informative talk about fire safety in the home and community.

A presentation was made to our own local hero Kelvin Kearns who was recently awarded a bravery award for his heroic deed saving a mans life following a car accident. Guest speaker Niall Curtin presented Kelvin with his presentation on behalf of the community alert group.

The next meeting of the group was fixed for Tuesday December 18th at 8pm and all attending were encouraged to spread the word and bring a friend or neighbour along.

“We Had A Ball”

A good friend of mine in our neighbouring parish of Kill has put pen to paper and written a wonderful book about the many different aspects and interests of his life. The well known Martin Kennedy has released his book of tales of days gone by with interesting tales of sporting adventures, drama performances and many other interests. Many interesting photos also appear throughout the book and at just €10 it is a real bargain. I am reading it myself at the moment and enjoying it immensely and hoping I will get the authors autograph in the coming weeks. Here in Kilmeaden you can purchase your copy in the Countrylife store.

Recent Deaths.

We offer our sincere condolences to Albert Kearns, Tigroe on the recent death of his brother Pat. Pat Kearns was a resident of Cul rua in Portlaw and was a quiet, unassuming man and will be missed desperately by his wife Jackie and their children. His funeral mass took place in St. Patricks church and he was laid to rest in the adjoining graveyard. May his gentle soul rest in peace.

We also send our sympathies to the family and friends of Jimmy Barry of Raheen in Kilmeaden and formerly of Caherune, Kill. November Masses.

The month of November is always the month we remember our deceased loved ones and friends. Each Wednesday of November a special mass is offered in Ballyduff church at 7.30pm for all our faithful departed. On the final Wednesday of the month November 28th the mass will be offered especially for all those who have died in the past 12 months. We offer our prayers and thoughts to both families and hope that they find comfort in the wonderful memories they have of their loved one.

GAA News.

The U15 football lads were in hard luck to be beaten in the Eastern final. They have put in great work this year and a big well done to them and their coaches for their committment.

The U21 hurlers had to suffer a defeat by the cruelest of margins when they were beaten by Mount Sion on a scoreline of 2-13 to 2-12 in the Quarter Final. Playing with a weakened side the team really dug deep and really clawed it back having been down by 8 points midway through the second half. The team can be really proud of their huge effort.

After a short delay the developments in the hurling field have resumed at a pace. This is a massive investment by the club which will benefit all the community. A big thank you again to all the families, individuals and businesses who have supported the venture.

The club is very lucky to have a great team of volunteer coaches involved with the younger age groups and courses are coming up soon for any prospective coaches and parents who may be interested. There is no pressure put on anyone but you are simply offered the chance to develop your knowledge and help with your childs development. If you are interested in finding out more you can get in contact with Juvenile Chairman Brian Hearne or Secretary Isobel O Neill.

Birthday Girl

We send our warmest birthday wishes to Bridie Power in Adamstown who recently celebrated her 90th birthday. Bridie celebrated her special day in her home with her family and I’m sure she was spoiled by them all as she so richly deserves. We wish Bridie every good wish and continued good health and happiness.

Community Alert Meeting.
Our local community alert group remain active and alert throughout the year but of course with the dark evenings and harsh weather it is important that we all remain vigilant at all times and be mindful of all our neighbours and parishioners. A community alert meeting will take place on Tuesday November 20th in Ballyduff Community Centre at 8pm. All are welcome to attend this meeting and please spread the word to your neighbours and friends. It is important that we all work together to keep our community and area safe for all who live and work in it.

Choir On Tour.

I was delighted last week to head off as part of our local parish choir on a day trip out to Bunratty Castle. We headed off from Ballyduff on a damp and miserable morning but we weren’t going to allow the weather to upset our plans. We were delighted that our bus driver for the day was local man John Keegan and knew we were in safe hands. Upon reaching the city of Limerick we had some time to spare so some headed off to a shopping centre for some retail therapy while the rest of us went for a walk around the beautiful St. Johns castle. I had never been to the castle before and I must say it is most certainly well worth the visit. So much history within the castle walls and the most stunning views from the castle top.

After collecting our happy shoppers and their purchases we made our way to Bunratty Castle where we were booked in for an evening banquet. We were certainly treated as royalty and were only referred to as Lord or Lady for the evening. In fact some peoples royal characteristics stood out more than others as our own Michael Hearne and Joan Cheasty were crowned Earl and Lady of Bunratty for the evening. Our Earl most certainly took his duties seriously making sure that each dish tasted perfect before it was given to the guests. One poor guest was even sent to the dungeon but don’t worry the Earl softened and showed him mercy. This visit was a wonderful experience as we dined as in times gone by with no cutlery but don’t worry we didn’t bring the habit home with us. We were treated to some beautiful singing and music from the Bunratty entertainers. If you get the chance to attend one of the banquets you should most definetly give it a try.

We enjoyed a lovely day together with plenty of chats and laughs along the way and of course the customary singsong on the bus. A big thank to Olivia and Declan for making all the arrangements and bookings and to all my fellow choirmates for their lovely company.

Knitting and Crochet, Wedding Bells and A Remarkable Lady

There will be a special Holy Souls mass each Wednesday night at 7.30pm in Ballyduff church during the month of November. The first of these masses will be this Wednesday 7th at 7.30pm.

The final one of these special masses will be on Wednesday November 28th and that mass is offered especially for those who died in the past 12 months. This is a lovely ceremony where each family are presented with a candle in memory of their loved one. Those who were buried in our graveyard during the year are automatically included in this mass but if you would like to include the name of a relative or friend who died outside the parish then you are very welcome o do so. To add a name to the list you can contact me Linda Spillane on 087 9838392 or you can write the name on the list which is in the main porch of the church.

Ballyduff AFC

Our local soccer club is really going from strength to strength and have been joined by a lot of new players this season. The club are absolutely delighted to welcome these new members and hope they will be with them for many years to come. The academy section has also welcomed many new members and the club now has a record number of players in the club.

Of course all these new players brings extra work for the coaches which is not good for them or the players. The club urgently needs help in the following age groups, boys U5/6/7/8/9/10 and 11 and girls U8/12/14 and 16. I am sure there are many of you out there who would give great encouragement and support to any of these teams and you will be rewarded with happy faces enjoying sports and learning the great gift of team spirit. If you would like to put your name forward please message or call Paddy Kirk on 087 2764883.

Recent Death

We extend our deepest sympathy to the Fitzmaurice family of Stonehouse on the recent death of Greg. The family have lived in Stonehouse for the past few years and before that lived in Blenheim House. Greg’s funeral mass took place in Ballyduff and he was buried in the adjoining graveyard. We extend our sympathies to his wife Claire and his children Ellen, Greg and Kate and all his family and friends. May he rest in peace.

Knitting and Crochet.

A local group meet every Tuesday morning at 10am in Ballyduff Community Centre to enjoy knitting and crochet. All levels are welcome to come along and join in the fun. Of course I am told that they get to enjoy a cuppa and a chat in between the serious job of creating.

A crochet class will also begin on Monday November 12th for six weeks and will run from 7pm to 8pm in Ballyduff Community Centre. All materials will be provided. If you would like some more information please contact Jeni on 086 8163101

GAA News

A big well done to the U15 Ballyduff/Portlaw football side who qualified for the Eastern Final by recording a win over S.Marys with a scoreline of 5-5 to 2-4. Hopefully the lads will continue to progress and win the title.

The club are very grateful to all who have contributed to their fundraising for the field development. The club are aware of the many pressures on peoples finances these days and are very grateful for the generosity shown towards the club which enables them to continue to enhance the facilities for their members and the community.

Wedding Bells.
We send our warmest congratulations to Danielle Keogh and Raymond Ryan who recently announced their engagement. Both families are delighted with the good news and I’m sure they will give some great advice and help in the wedding plans. However I do know that the real boss will be the couples beautiful daughter Erica and so she may have it all planned already. We wish the happy couple every happiness for the future.

Remarkable Lady

We offer our deepest condolences to Mary Kenny, Newtown and Catherine Millea, Holy Cross on the recent death of their beloved mother Biddy Millea. Biddy held the title of the oldest parishioner in Butlerstown and in her 98th year was very proud of her age. Up until recent months she enjoyed very good health and kept up to date with all the modern trends including skyping, texting and liked to know how many likes her photo might get on facebook. Biddy was one of the most lovable characters you could meet. She loved to meet and chat with people and especially loved visits with her grandchildren Conor, Brian, David and Eoin and her beloved great grandchildren William,Tom, Ellie, Leah and James. You were always assured of a good laugh when you met Biddy and that little rogues glint in her eye would always bring out a funny tale or two. A great cook she loved to care for her family and her beloved dogs. She enjoyed keeping up with current affairs and really enjoyed watching the game of tennis with a special interest in tennis supreme Roger Federer solely for his tennis skills of course.

Biddy shall be missed greatly not only by her family but by all who knew her. She gave us all great example while here on earth, she showed us how to enjoy your life and take care of those around you. She showed us that age is but a number and that you should enjoy every minute of each day. Her infectious smile will remain in her memories and we hope that she is now reunited with her husband and that they now both enjoy the peace of their heavenly home. May her sweet gentle soul rest in peace.
