If you would like to get involved please contact any club member.

County Champions

A huge congratulations to the Ballyduff LGFA U13 girls who saw off Ballysaggart in Walsh Park to become county champions. This would not have been possible without the hard work put in by the girls and of course the great support they receive from their parents and supporters in Ballyduff and Portlaw. The girls arrived home to great cheers and the customary tooting of car horns. Well done girls you should all be very proud of yourselves.

A Just Reward.

On September 27th 2017 Kelvin Kearns, Tigroe was driving home on a wet and windy evening when he suddenly noticed the signs of an accident around the Holy Cross area. These signs included a flattened fence so he stopped and got out of his vehicle and upon crossing the road saw that a car was overturned in a dyke down below. Without another thought he waded in waist deep into the water and pulled the man from the car and held the man above the water line until the paramedics arrived. The gentleman involved spent several weeks in hospital but thankfully he made a full recovery.

I mention this incident again as I want to send many congratulations to Kelvin who last week received a National Bravery Award for his heroic actions. Kelvin was one of 21 people presented with an award at Farmleigh House, Phoenix Park. Kelvin of course would be the last person to do things for awards or recognition but he trully deserved this for putting anothers safety first and for always being willing to help out in whatever way he can.

Bus Service

I always like to bring you news of services provided within our community. I must admit that I knew nothing of this service until it was mentioned to me during the week so I headed off on my investigations. Local link is a bus service which runs from Dungarvan to Waterford city every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday. They stop off in different rural areas along the way to collect people and allow them a few hours in town to do their business or have a browse around. The bus stops in Ballyduff car park at 10am and at the Post Office in Kilmeaden at 10.15 and returns you back again at 1.45pm and 2pm. The cost of the return trip is €6 for adults, €3 for students and children with under 3’s travelling free. The service also accepts the Department free travel pass. You can book the bus by calling low call number 0761102076. If you would like to visit their website it is www.locallinkwaterford.ie

I think this is a fantastic service to have so please use it and enjoy a nice stress free spin into town.

A True Legend.

As all us supporters were left disappointed with the result of the Ireland V Denmark game we were bursting with pride to see our very own soccer hero the late great Frankie Carlin being honoured at the match and through the program. The Carlin family were invited to the game as guests of the IFA and were treated to some wonderful hospitality. They watched the game from brilliant seats but unfortunately it wasn’t the most exciting of games. I’m sure Frankie himself was shouting down some words of encouragement to the players but alas it wasn’t to be. Whatever the result this was a very proud moment for the Carlin family who truly love the game and knew how much the game and our local club meant to Frankie.

When you think of Ballyduff AFC Frankie is one of the names you think of immediately. He served his club for many years as manager, committee member and treasurer and always put his heart and soul into every job he took on. He was a man of committment and full of encouragement for the young players coming up the ranks. His passion and love for the game was evident to all through his words and deeds and so having him honoured at such a high level was indeed right and just. As I looked around the soccer field in Ballyduff the other night and saw all the young boys and girls, teenagers and adults training I looked to the skies and smiled because without great men like Frankie Carlin we wouldn’t have such a vibrant and active club and long may men and women like him be given the recognition they so rightly deserve. Although the match in the Aviva was disappointing, a true hero was honoured and to Margaret, Anthony, Michael, David, Nicola and all the Carlin family we say that we share your pride in a man who will never be forgotten.

Meeting Group.

There are many people in our parish who may be retired, living alone, widowed or finding themselves with some time on their hands and would enjoy a friendly cuppa and a chat with friends and friends they haven’t met yet. Some people have come up with the idea of a little informal meeting group who would meet up for a cuppa, a chat maybe a game of cards, chess other board games or other suggestions people may have.

Come along to Ballyduff Community Centre on Wednesday October 17th at 3pm for a cuppa and a chat about what things you would enjoy doing. This is a wonderful idea , in a world where everything seems to move along at super speed why not stop and take some time out not just for yourself but for the others you will meet there.

Recent Death

We extend our deepest sympathies to Niamh Larkin, Powersknock on the recent death of her beloved sister Cait. Cait Morrissey O Neill was a lady of great beauty not only on the outside but also had a beautiful and caring soul. She absolutely adored her family and received that adoration back in abundance. She loved shopping, fashion, hurling, music but above all loved spending time with her family and friends. I had the pleasure of meeting Cait a few times at Niamhs house and she always lit up the room.

She dedicated her life to helping others in her nursing career and helped many many people recover through diet and excercise in the cardiac rehab program she ran. In 2016 she married the man of her dreams Eamonn and they had a wonderful wedding day surrounded by their nearest and dearest.

Caits’ funeral mass took place in Ballygunner and it was an absolutely beautiful ceremony so personal and fitting. Cait fought her illness with great courage and dignity and I hope that in time her family will too find the courage to face the road ahead and find strength in the wonderful memories they have. We offer our deepest sympathies to all her family and many friends and we hope that Cait now rests where there is no more pain or suffering but only joy and rewards for a life so well lived for the good of others. May her gentle soul rest in peace.

Good News for Kilmeaden

It was wonderful to hear the news that Kilmeaden has been awarded €96,000 for a new cycle/walk link from the village to the Greenway. A group of people have been working hard since the opening of the Greeway to campaign to have a safe access way onto the Greenway. Although the Greenway is not far from the village, cyclists and pedestrians have to make their way along a very busy road to get to it. This major boost under the Town and Village Renewal scheme 2018 will see the construction of a new safe link to the Greenway and can only bring extra visitors to our community.

Spooky Time.

Halloween is fast approaching but are you feeling brave enough to get on board the Spooky Express. For one night only on October 27th the Spooky Express will depart from Kilmeaden station into the unknown but as you travel along by the River Suir you don’t know who you could meet or what could happen. Tickets for this event need to be pre booked on 051- 384058. Please be aware that this may not be suitable for young children or those afraid of the dark and strobe lighting will also be used.

Autumn Wedding

I was honoured to have been invited along to the recent wedding of local lady Stephaine Power and her Westmeath fiance Ronan Hogan. Following a couple of miserable days the sun shone on a beautiful Autumnal Friday as this lovely couple got ready to recite their vows before friends and family. Many years ago Stephaine joined the church choir that I was running at the time as a shy, soft spoken little girl with the voice of an angel and after some time she treated me and many of you to some beautiful performances in masses and many talent competitions. This is why I felt such great pride as I watched this shy little girl walk up the aisle on the arm of her very proud father as the confident, beautiful young lady she has become.

The guests at the wedding are still talking about the wedding ceremony which is one I will not forget for a long time. It was full of joy, happiness and hope with music from the Ballyduff Church choir and the St.Pauls Gospel choir and solos from Eamonn O Leary, Sandra O Keeffe and there were some teary eyes(especially mine) when chief bridesmaid Caroline delivered a beautiful rendition of “Broken Road” especially for her sister and new brother in law. The happy couple captured the memories of their special day with some fantastic photos at the Waterford Suir Valley Railway. It was then on to The Woodlands for a gorgeous meal and then dancing to the sounds of Broadstreet followed by our very own DJ supreme the great John O Shea.

It was an absolutely brilliant day from start to finish and one I won’t forget for a long time. I genuinely wish Stephaine and Ronan the very best that life has to offer and hope that they enjoy sunshine and happiness throughout their married life.
