The numbers drawn in the latest GAA lotto were 1, 12, 13 and 18. There was no winner of the jackpot and the three lucky dip winners of €50 each were Niamh Ryan, Andrew Webster and Gretta O Callaghan. The next draw will take place on September 17th and there will be a jackpot of €11,000 on offer. Choose four lucky numbers and you could be trying to decide how to spend that lovely jackpot.

MARATHON MAN

Congratulations to Pat Fitzgerald, Ballyduff West who was the recent winner of the Waterford Greenway Half Marathon. This was the 5th annual Waterford Greenway Half Marathon and is sponsored by Waterford company Eurofins. Pat who is a member of Waterford AC is very dedicated to his training and preparation. His entire family are extremely proud of him and delighted with his success as they see first-hand the dedication and commitment he puts into his sport. We wish Pat continued success.

LOVE IS THE AIR

It was certainly wedding season in the area over the past couple of weeks as 3 local couples said their I do’s. St. Nicholas Church, Ballyduff was the setting for the pretty wedding of Megan Harrington, Ballyduff to her Kilkenny man James Deasy. Megan looked beautiful as she arrived on the arm of her very proud Dad William. Following the beautiful ceremony under the watchful eye of Fr. Richard O Halloran the couple and their guests made their way to the stunning Faithlegg House Hotel to enjoy their reception in the fantastic sunshine.

The very popular Keith Norris made his way to The Rivercourt Hotel to wed his sweetheart, Kathy Butler. Their beautiful children Bonnie and Sam ensured that Mammy and Daddy said their vows and then it was time for the happy couple and their guests to enjoy a delicious meal and some music and dancing.
Popular proprietor of Mirror Mirror Hair Salon in Kilmeaden Karen Walker travelled to the Greenway Manor Hotel to exchange vows with her childhood sweetheart Blaine Toner on the 20th anniversary of their relationship, under the watchful eye of their beautiful children Emmie and Harry. The Greenway Manor holds many happy childhood memories for Karen as she enjoyed many happy meals there with her wonderful grandparents.

We wish all these happy couples every best wish for their future lives together. Love is most definitely in the air.

GRADUATION

Congratulations to Ava Spillane, Matthews Cross who recently graduated from the hairdressing and barbering course at Waterford College of Further Education. Ava has wanted to be a hairdresser since the age of four and has really enjoyed the course. She made lifelong friends and enjoyed the course content and the work experience. Ava now works at Shades Hair Studio in Ferrybank and loves being part of the team. She feels very lucky to have the opportunity to grow and gain more knowledge under the supervision of the wonderful ladies at Shades.
Ava celebrated her graduation with her family and is looking forward to progressing in her career.

A TRUE LADY

The whole area was deeply saddened to hear of the death of the very popular Mary Weldon (nee Guiry) of Coolagadden. Mary was a true lady with a warm smile and a friendly word for everyone she met. A hardworking lady who adored her family, Mary enjoyed meeting people for a chat and a coffee and was so well liked and popular with everyone she met. Mary’s faith was of utmost importance to her, and she was a treasured member of our community. Even through poor health she remained upbeat and in good spirits. She will be missed deeply by her husband Billy, daughter Suzie, sons Christy, Kenny and Jason, her grandchildren Jenny, Nicola, Joanne, Eve, Louis and Bonnie, her sister Cait, brothers Jimmy and Tommy, extended family, neighbours and friends. We pray that Mary is now at rest, and she is rewarded by the Lord for all her good deeds. May she rest in the peace of the Lord.

COMMUNITY GARDEN.

Work has commenced at the community garden site, and it is wonderful to see the progress. This is all thanks to some generous donations received from businesses and individuals. The digger moved in and cleared some unwanted growth and began to mark out some pathways. Stone has now been laid on the pathways and a gate will be placed at the entrance, which has been very kindly donated by a local family. Decisions will need to be made about what items will go where, so suggestions are always welcome. If you would like to be added to the Whats app group, please contact Peter Jacob, Declan Finn or Linda Spillane and you can then keep up to date with the progress. The group hope to be able to apply for grants soon but if any individuals or businesses would like to donate to this project, please contact any of the people above. The community garden will be for everyone, a place for all to enjoy and for our community to come together.

County Champions, Match Made in Heaven and Sports Ability Day

COUNTY CHAMPIONS

On Sunday August 27th Ballyduff Lower U12 Camogie team headed to Cappoquin GAA grounds to take on St. Declan’s in the U12C Cup County Final 2023. A big crowd of supporters travelled to support the team and were treated to a fantastic game of camogie. The girls gave a superb performance and fought for every ball. Their determination paid off as they took the County title defeating St. Declan’s 4-5 to 1-3. What a brilliant achievement from a small club who have only been on the scene for 2 years. Congratulations to all the team members, their coaches and all the background staff and of course the parents and supporters. These girls have created a little bit of history and have given us a little glance at the very bright future ahead in Ballyduff Lower Camogie club. Thank you to John Hearne for the lovely photo.

MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN

The Holy Cross Church in Tramore was the scene of a most beautiful wedding on Friday August 25th between sweethearts Gary Flynn, Adamstown, Kilmeaden and his stunning bride Yvonne Power from Tramore. This very popular couple recited their vows under the watchful eye of Fr. Ned Hassett. After the ceremony the couple and their guests made their way to The Ferrycarrig Hotel in Wexford to enjoy a delicious meal and a night of dancing and fun. We wish this happy couple every happiness for their future and many years of joy and love.

END OF AN ERA

On Sunday August 29th the last pint was pulled in Haughtons. A large crowd gathered to wish Gerry and Margaret the very best for their future. It really was the end of an era as this iconic pub closed its doors for the last time. A place where a good chat was always guaranteed, a hearty laugh was always heard, a place where a music session could break out at a minute’s notice. The pub has been graced with many wonderful characters over the years and there have been many memorable occasions celebrated in Haughtons. Gerry and Margaret will take some time out to enjoy time with their sons and their beautiful grandchildren. Will the doors of Haughtons open again? Who knows but for now we thank Gerry and Margaret for giving all their customers and visitors, a friendly welcome, a place to chat and relax and a chance to meet with old friends and new. We hope they enjoy a well-deserved rest but I’m sure their grandchildren will have other plans for them.

For the first time in its 17-year history, Rás na mBan, has introduced a Waterford stage in its five-day schedule. This is Ireland’s only women’s international bike race and will take place from September 6th to 10th.
The 2023 edition of the race is the 17th under the title of Rás na mBan and the 36th annual international stage race for women in Ireland. In its current format it runs for five days and six stages totalling over 400km of racing action.

If you are available on the day get out on the road in Kilmeaden and cheer the ladies on as they pass through. I am sure they would appreciate the support and encouragement.

LEAVING CERTIFICATE

We wish congratulations and the very best of luck to all the young men and women in our area who received their Leaving Certificate results last week. We hope that you feel happy and content, but if you are not fully satisfied, please remember that there are many roads to get to where you want to be. Take your time and decide which road is best for you.

KINDNESS FOR PIETA

On Sunday July 16th, the Kilmeaden Vintage Tractor Club had a mixed bag of weather for their annual Tractor Run. Each year this is a much looked forward to event and the group have raised a fantastic amount of money for charity. On Friday August 18th in Haughtons Pub, the group presented the proceeds to a representative from Pieta House. A fabulous amount of €3,452.60 was raised and Pieta House were extremely grateful. This charity provides vital services within our city and county to their clients and their families. They provide that listening ear and helping hand to those who need it, when they need it most. A big well done to all the organisers of the event, those who took part and all who donated to such a worthy cause.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

Kindness is one of the best gifts you can bestow upon another.
If someone is in need, lend them a helping hand.
Do not wait for a thank you.
True kindness, lies within the act of giving,
without the expectation of something in return.

CAMOGIE TRIP

A large contingent headed off from Tom Cheasty Park to support the Waterford Camogie Team as they took on Cork in the All-Ireland Final. There was great excitement as the bus started its’ journey to Croke Park with many young girls waiting for their chance to see the young women they admired and looked up to. Unfortunately, the result was not what we wanted but that didn’t stop the group enjoying their trip and what a wonderful experience for them watching Waterford women play in an All-Ireland Final in Croke Park. This team has shown such resilience and determination and are an example of where hard work and commitment can bring you. We have some very talented camogie players in the Ballyduff Lower club, so that bus could be on the road to Croke Park in the future, supporting a local player.
There was a great surprise for 3 of the local young ladies as they opened the match day programme and saw their photo. What a great photo of Ava Dooley, Hannah Larkin and Aine Counihan, whose faces display exactly what camogie means to them.

DEATH OF JOHN MADDOX.

The death of the very popular John Maddox was greeted with great sadness and grief. John who lived in Whitfield South, Butlerstown was a man of great wit and humour who loved to enjoy a chat and a laugh. John battled illness for the past few years but never complained or felt sorry for himself. He remained upbeat and often made those around him feel better.
Like many young men of his time, he began working in Waterford Crystal as a teenager. It was in later years that John was to find his true profession as he and Helen purchased The Bally Inn. John was a natural behind the bar and really enjoyed chatting with the customers and loved the laughs and the many music sessions. It was always a wonderful spot for people to gather and enjoy great music and song.
John and his beloved wife Helen most certainly meant their wedding vows when they said them. Their love and devotion for each other was evident to all and they were truly devoted to each other. John will be sadly missed by his wife Helen, his brother Danny and his sister Helen, his extended family, neighbours and friends. John’s funeral mass was celebrated by Fr. Pat Fitzgerald in St. Nicholas’s Church, Ballyduff and he was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery. We pray that he now rests in gentle peace and that he is now free from all pain and suffering and that he may now enjoy the peace and light of heaven.

Initially they took on the challenge just to challenge themselves but then decided to raise some money for Waterford Marine Search and Rescue. These kindhearted girls chose this charity because of the fantastic work they do continuously around Waterford City and County. There is still time to donate by following the link for Hannah’s Fundraiser on www.gofundme.com

Despite the miserable weather, a large crowd attended the annual graveyard mass on Wednesday July 26th. The mass was celebrated in the church will beautiful music and song from Gerry Walsh. Prayers were offered for all those buried in the graveyard and all those who no longer have anyone left to pray for them. A big thank you to all those volunteers who have been cutting the grass and strimming edges over the past few weeks. Their generosity and kindness is to be admired and respected. It is hoped that we will be allocated a scheme worker to maintain the graveyard in the next few weeks.
It was lovely to see so many people go to the community centre after mass to enjoy a cuppa and refreshments. Many people enjoyed a chat and a laugh and met people they hadn’t seen for some time. A big thank you to all who donated cakes, buns and biscuits and a special thank you to Damian and Majella in Gala, Kilmeaden who provided cups and biscuits.
If you would like to book a weekend anniversary mass for your loved one please contact Linda Spillane on 087 9838392.

BALLYDUFF CAMOGIE

Many of the members of Ballyduff Camogie Club travelled to the SETU Arena on Thursday July 27th to watch our county team train ahead of their All Ireland Final. There was then a chance to meet the team and get some autographs and photos. What a wonderful inspiration these women are to all the young girls around the county who are taking up their hurleys and playing their hearts out for their clubs. We all look forward in hope of a Deise win.

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK

A person becomes 10 times more attractive,
not by their looks, but by their acts of kindness,
love, respect, honesty and loyalty they show.

Deise Success, Beautiful Peg and World Champion

GRAVEYARD MASS

The annual graveyard mass for St. Nicholas’s Church, Ballyduff will take place at 7pm on Wednesday July 26th. This is a wonderful opportunity to come together to honour our deceased loved ones and also to pray for those who no longer have anyone left to pray for them. A reminder that if you are tidying up your family plot before the mass, please take away your rubbish and old flowers with you.
Following the graveyard mass there will be some refreshments served in the community centre. Drop in and enjoy a cuppa and a chat with old friends and new.

BIRTHDAY TIME.

Congratulations to local lady Amber Searson who recently celebrated her 25th birthday with her family where I am sure there was some lovely cake on offer. No doubt Amber also enjoyed a lemonade or two with her friends to mark the happy occasion.
Ballyduff West lady, Sara Fitzpatrick celebrated her milestone 30th birthday with her parents Michael and Mary and of course the most important members of the family Riley and Chip. Sara celebrated with a beautiful cake and really enjoyed her day.

DEISE SUCCESS

The Ballyduff Lower GAA club had a winner in the July Deise draw. Minnie McGrath was the lucky winner of €250 and I know she was delighted with her win. The club have had a winner in the June and July draws so I wonder will they make it the hat trick in August? Fingers crossed there will be more good news for someone!

BEAUTIFUL PEG

A deep cloud fell over Kilmeaden when news spread of the death of Peg Aulsberry of Blacknock. A beautiful person inside and out, with a kind soul and warm heart. She was a true Irish mammy who always put her children first. She was a loving and caring wife to Pat (Spud) and adored her 3 sons Liam, Mickey and Jimbo and her 3 daughters Anne, Marian and Joanne. She was also a very proud grandmother and great grandmother. A wonderful neighbour and friend to all. Her home was open to everyone to drop in for a cuppa and a chat. She worked hard throughout her life and when sickness came knocking at her door, she faced it with immense strength and courage. Blacknock and Kilmeaden will miss Peg’s smile and friendly face. We pray that she now rests in peace in the loving arms of our Lord and we hope that her family will draw comfort from all their beautiful memories. Sleep well Peg, you will never be forgotten.

WORLD CHAMPION

Last week I told you all about Charlie Laffan, Carriganure who was off to Dundee in Scotland to take part in the Karate World Championships. I have the great honour of telling you all that Charlie struck gold and has returned as a World Champion. What a fantastic achievement for this young man but also a just reward for his dedication and commitment to his training. Charlie is a member of the Pat Rockett Academy and the group returned home with 5 Gold medals, 3 Silver and 4 Bronze. We congratulate Charlie and all his teammates and wish them continued success.

Also celebrating this week was Helena Power, Matthews Cross as she turned the young age of 70. Helena is a wonderful neighbour and friend to all in Matthews Cross and I am sure her husband Eddie waited on her hand and foot all day and that her dog Bosco made sure she got plenty of cuddles.

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS

The 11th WUKF World Karate Championships took place in Dundee, Scotland from July 13th to the 16th and The Pat Rockett Karate and Kickboxing club from Waterford City headed there to represent their country with pride. One of the competitors was Kilmeaden’s own Charlie Laffan. Charlie has been excelling at his sport for the past few years and really loves what he does. He is very dedicated and committed and trains extremely hard. In next week’s notes we will be able to report on how the Championships went and no doubt there will be lots of positive news.

A LITTLE PRINCESS

We all send our warmest congratulations to popular employee of The Sweep Bar and Restaurant, Carol Kiely, and her partner Pat on the recent birth of their beautiful baby daughter. Baby Rosie arrived just a few days before Mammy’s birthday and what a wonderful gift to receive. We are all looking forward to meeting Rosie and wish this happy little family every happiness for the future.

RECENT DEATH

We extend our deepest sympathies to the Costello family in Butlerstown on the recent death of Michael Costello. Michael had many friends here in Kilmeaden. He was a true gentleman who loved his family and was a true friend to so many. A gifted mechanic but his other great passion was cycling. He loved to get out on the road with his fellow cyclists enjoying a chat and laugh along the way. He was also a huge supporter of his beloved Butlerstown GAA club. Michael’s health deteriorated in recent years, but he faced every challenge with strength and courage. Michael will be sadly missed by his beloved wife Angela, his son Tyrone, daughter Aislinn and his adored grandson James, his brothers Johnny, Tommy, Mossie and Joey, his sisters Maureen, Helen, Bridget, Anne, Catherine and Martina, his extended family and his many friends.

COMMUNITY GARDEN

Finally, all the paperwork has been completed and the entrance to the garden has been opened. Some grass cutting has taken place and some plans are now being discussed as to where to place the different areas. There will be a lot of groundwork which will need to be done to lay out the plan for the garden and the group are looking forward to getting stuck in. The group are also trying to raise some funds to get started and hope to apply for some grants as they become available. They have been delighted to receive some donations from businesses and individuals and are very grateful to everyone for their support. If you would like to donate, please contact Peter Jacob, Declan Finn or Linda Spillane.

Wedding Day, Graveyard Mass and Tractor Run

Anniversary Celebrations

There has been a lot of love in the air in the past couple of weeks with many couples celebrating their wedding anniversaries. Mark and Rachel Kennedy in Ballyduff West have shared 39 years of wedded bliss and I am sure they celebrated their happy day with their daughters and their beloved grandchildren. I’m sure Rachel may even have treated Mark to a serenade with her beautiful voice. Also celebrating were Ger and Aileen Barron in Kildermody. This very popular couple have 30 years of marriage under their belt and enjoyed their day with Fionn, Dearbhla and Sorcha and I have no doubt that they may have had a song or two by the great Michael Hearne. Meanwhile up in Kilmagemogue Dermot and Louise Dooley marked 20 years of marriage with their beautiful children Darragh, Ava, Cathal and Olivia. Dermot loves nothing better than a good GAA game but I’m sure he knows that meeting Louise was the best match of his life. We wish all these happy couples many more years of happiness together.

Happy Retirement

It was the end of an era in Kilmeaden last week when Pat Hennessy hung up his spanners and sockets at Hennessy’s garage. Pat celebrated 60 years in business in April and has now decided to sell the business and enjoy a more relaxing, carefree lifestyle. Pat has enjoyed his working life and has made some wonderful friends along the way. He is due a rest now but knowing Pat he won’t be sitting around doing the crossword. He will now have more time to attend some GAA games and of course his grandchildren will find ways to keep him busy. Kathleen and himself may take a little breakaway or two. We wish Pat and Kathleen, who was by his side throughout his working life, keeping all the accounts and paperwork in order, a very happy and healthy retirement. We thank Pat for his years of service and commitment to the area and for the employment he generated.

Wedding Day

We send our heartiest congratulations to Jason Walsh, Ballyduff who was recently married in Tramore Church to his sweetheart Claire Cowman. The couple exchanged their vows in front of their family and friends. Two very important guests, the couple’s children Mia and Noah watched with great pride and interest, making sure that their Mammy and Daddy got everything right. Following the ceremony, it was off to The Brandon House Hotel in New Ross to celebrate in style and dance the night away. We wish this happy couple a very happy marriage and a very bright future with their little family.

Graveyard Mass

The annual graveyard mass at St. Nicholas’s Church, Ballyduff will take place on Wednesday July 26th. This is always a lovely way to remember and honour our loved ones who have gone before us and to offer our prayers for those who are buried there but no longer have someone left to pray for them. Please remember that if you are tidying up your family grave or replacing flowers, please bring a rubbish bag to bring home your old flowers.
Please spread the word to people outside the parish who may have people buried in the graveyard.

Tractor Run

Every year the annual tractor run in Kilmeaden is a much looked forward to event and it is always a great day out. A very hard-working committee ensure each year that this event is the best that it can possibly be. The safety of the participants and spectators is of utmost importance with stewards covering all the areas around the route. Sunday July 16th is the all-important date and the starting point and registration take place at Haughtons Pub. The run will begin at 1pm sharp. The route is a beautiful scenic trip through the countryside. Upon return participants need to rehydrate with a lemonade or two and their own engines need replenishing with the tasty barbeque. Tractors are parked up for the night and everyone enjoys a great laugh and a chat with old friends and new.
This event has raised a lot of money for charity over the years and this year the recipient will be Pieta House. This charity provides an excellent service, not only for their clients but also for the families who are also in need of help and support. Many lives are saved due to charities like this, and we must do everything we possibly can to help them to continue their fantastic work.
If you would like any further information about the Tractor run, please contact Pat Fitzgerald on 087 2216589.

Recent Death

We extend our deepest sympathies to Martin O Reilly, Ardeenlone on the recent death of his father Denis O Reilly. Denis was a resident of Knockaun East in Cappoquin. Denis, who was a retired member of An Garda Siochana is predeceased by his beloved wife Angela. He will be sadly missed by his sons Martin and Kevin, his brother Tadgh, his daughter-in-law Tracey, his beloved granddaughters Bonnie, Sophie, Maisie and Trudie and all his extended family and many friends. Denis’s funeral mass took place in St. Mary’s Church, Cappoquin followed by burial in Mount Melleray Abbey Cemetery.
I had the pleasure some years ago of having a few chats with Denis when he would collect his adored granddaughters from school. He was a lovely quiet unassuming man who was genuinely interested in what you had to say. He and his late wife Angela would be so excited about collecting the girls and literally idolized them.
We now pray that Denis is at rest and reunited with his beloved wife Angela. May their sweet gentle souls now rest in the peace and love of Christ.
