A True Angel

We were all certainly lost for words last week when news spread of the death of Gwen Murray of Ardeenlone. At just the tender age of 51 Gwen fought her battle with her illness for the previous couple of years. She fought with great strength and courage and always remained upbeat. Her true focus at all times was her family and her only wish was to be at home with her husband John and her children Ben and Abbie. There was never any doubt how much she loved and cared for them all and their home was full of friendship, love and happiness.

Gwen was originally from Cherry Terrace, Lisduggan and is survived by her sisters Karen, Annmarie, Laura, Paula, Jennifer and Michelle. It was lovely to watch all of Gwen’s sisters stay up with her as she was brought home from the Undertakers. It was lovely to get a little insight into how life must have been with seven girls in the family, I’m sure there was many an interesting conversation but no doubt they will remain within the sister code.

Gwen left us way too soon but while she was here she taught us so much, she taught us that above all family must always come first. She showed us strength, courage, patience and dignity. She was a beautiful soul. When I see a rainbow I will think of her love of colour and brightness, when I see the sun I will feel the warmth of her smile, our lives were enriched by knowing her and we are grateful that she left us with so many beautiful memories. May her sweet gentle soul now rest where there is no more pain or sickness and every day is full of sunshine and rainbows.

Our Sympathy
We extend our deepest sympathy to the Aulsberry family on the death of Nicholas Aulsberry. A native of Blacknock, Nicholas was a retired Battalion Quartermaster Sergeant. He stood down in 2005 after many years service to the Irish Army. Nicholas was a long time resident of Kilcullen, Co. Kildare. He served a 43 year career in the Defence Forces which included 10 overseas trips. We extend our deepest sympathy to all the Aulsberry family.

Virtual Graduation
We say a huge congratulations to all the young men and women from 6th class in Ballyduff NS who recently celebrated their graduation on line. On Thursday June 25th each student was treated to a superbly put together video by their teacher John Carey. The video contained many photos from their primary school years along with messages from all their teachers, Fr. O Halloran, Fr. O Byrne, their music teacher, cycling instructor and would you believe a message from Bono! I was honoured to get a look at this video and I must say that John Carey really went above and beyond the call of duty and really made the 6th class graduation very special indeed. We wish all these young people the very best as they prepare for secondary school.

The coaches for each group will have all the details you need. The club are looking forward to getting back to training and games and welcoming the community back.

Church News

The following is a message from our Parish Priest Fr. Richard O Halloran:

Friends we look forward to welcoming you all back to your church for our Eucharistic celebrations. We ask that parishioners follow the simple pieces of advice provided as they enter the Church from hand sanitation to marked seating to social distancing etiquette.

For the duration of the Co-vid 19 crisis, the following is the schedule of masses for Portlaw/Ballyduff from June 29th 2020. They will be reviewed on a monthly basis

Please take note of changes to certain mass times and the extra masses on Saturday mornings.

Portlaw
Tuesday 7.30pm

Wednesday 10am

Saturday 11.30am and 6pm

Sunday 11am.

Ballyduff
Thursday 7.30pm

Friday 10am

Saturday 10am and 7.30pm

Sunday 9.30am
Saturday morning masses are extra weekend masses and will be for parishioners over 70 years of age and a member or two of their families. This is not to make them feel more isolated than they may already feel but just to offer them a comfortable assured space as they attend Curch in what continues to be worrying times. Of course they are free to attend any mass they wish.

No weekend anniversary masses will be offered for the time being and individual baptisms will be celebrated until further notice. Basket collections will not take place during mass but we simply ask for people to use the boxes provided in our church porches as they enter or leave the Church to make their weekly contribution.s

Could we also make an appeal for weekly and Easter priest collection envelopes to be returned at peoples convenience and I thank those who have already done so.
See You All Very Soon
Fr. Richard O Halloran.

Moment of Solidarity

A big well done to our friends from the Portlaw Community Alert group who organised a book of condolences at Portlaw Garda Station for Detective Garda Colm Horkan. The group made sure that all Covid 19 restrictions were adhered to. Garda Horkan was shot down in the line of duty and this was a shark reminder to us all of the risks taken by our Garda as they head out to work each day. It was a beautiful moment of solidarity as the large crowd gathered at Portlaw Garda Station and stood for a minutes silence with Sergeant Deirdre O Neill and Garda Brian Quirke
