St. Patrick’s Day.

Hopefully everyone has enjoyed a very happy and safe St. Patrick’s Day and have enjoyed the festivities. During his wonderful years as our Parish Priest, Fr. Mick O Byrne christened my Dad Noel O Sullivan as the Minister of Shamrock. Daddy sets out on his tour of the parish each year to find the best of the shamrock to provide for the priest and parishioners. This year was no exception, and he found a rather large spray of shamrock. Fr. Francis will need an extension on his vestments to wear this spray.

Night for Dod Success, Heartfelt Gratitude and Church Renovation

Recent Deaths.

We extend our deepest sympathy to the Fitmaurice family on the recent death of Claire Fitmaurice, late of Stonehouse, Kilmeaden. Claire and her late husband Greg moved to Kilmeaden some years back and soon became very popular residents. Claire had a great love for family and spoke of her children and grandchildren with great love and affection. She was a woman of great faith and devotion, and mass was a very important part of her life. We extend our sincere condolences to her son Greg, daughters Kate and Ellen, her grandchildren Fionn and Holly, sons-in-law Liam and Phil, daughter-in-law Sarah and all her extended family. We pray that she is reunited with her beloved husband Greg where they enjoy the peace and love of our Heavenly Father.
We offer sincere condolences to the family and many friends of Kitty Brett, late of Portlaw. Kitty and her husband Paddy spent many wonderful years living in Tigroe before moving down into the village of Portlaw. Kitty was in her 101st year and although ill health had confined her to the house in recent years, her mind remained as sharp as a button. She kept up to date with all the happenings around her and in the country and the world. She loved to welcome visitors for a chat and without even realising it, you could happily sit for two or three hours listening to her wonderful stories. Kitty and Paddy’s story was certainly one of true love and devotion. They worshipped the ground each other walked on and through Kitty’s illness, Paddy cared for her with wonderful attention and softness. He most definitely carried out his wedding vows, and their marriage was a beacon of light for all married couples. Kitty will be deeply mourned by her husband Paddy, her son Pat, granddaughters Aoife and Eimear, her extended family and her many friends from far and wide. May her sweet gentle soul now rest in peace in the loving arms of God.

Night for Dod Success.

On Saturday February 21st all roads lead to O Donnachas in Kilmeaden for a special night of remembrance of the very popular Dod Whelan. Dod will never be forgotten, and his memory will live on forever. This night was organised by his daughters Shanice and Chloe who wanted to give back in memory of their beloved Dad. A fantastic amount of €3,111 was raised for the Bone Marrow for Leukemia Trust and Shanice and Chloe are deeply grateful to all who attended, those who donated, shared posts about the event, bought raffle tickets, donated prizes and all those who helped in any way. On behalf of everyone I would like to thank and congratulate Shanice and Chloe for finding time through their own grief to give back and help others who are now needing the support and care of the Leukemia Trust. Their father would be so proud of them and his legacy of always helping others has most certainly been carried on through his daughters.

Heartfelt Gratitude.

Following 21 years of wonderful service to the undertaking business, Michael and Dolores Kinsella have decided to bid farewell to the business. Michael and Dolores were known far and wide for their kindness and great attention to detail. Their top priority was always to ensure the family of the deceased were listened to and that the final wishes of their loved ones were taken care of. They carried out their duties with great care and attention and took great pride in providing a top-class service. They considered it a great honour to be asked by a family to officiate at their loved one’s funeral.
We wish Michael and Dolores every happiness for the future and thank them sincerely for giving such wonderful service and giving great peace and comfort to families during a very difficult time in their lives.
In memory of all those whom they have laid rest, Michael and Dolores held a special mass of reflection and gratitude in St. Patrick’s Church, Portlaw on Tuesday February 24th. The mass was celebrated by Fr. Francis Xavier and he thanked Michael and Dolores for their professionalism throughout the years but more importantly he said for the care and support they gave to families during the hardest time of their lives. Richie Nugent sang some beautiful hymns during the mass and Dolores read a fitting piece from scripture. Many people were happy to get the opportunity to thank the Kinsella’s in person and to wish them well.

The group is run by three fabulous local ladies, Helen Millea, Eleanor Foley and Joan Cheasty who volunteer their time and energy to produce this show every year. It is a wonderful opportunity for our young people to showcase their talents and build on their confidence and self-esteem.
This year’s production was full of colour, music and dance and the audience were really treated to a fabulous night of entertainment. The quality of this show each year is exceptional and the dedication and commitment of the production and background team is second to none. Many of those helping backstage with hair, make-up, set design, dancing etc are past members of the group who now give their time and talent to help others enjoy the same experience they had.

On February 12th, 1966, one of the greatest Kilmeaden and Portlaw unions took place. Noel O Sullivan and Nancy Power were joined in matrimony in St. Nicholas Church followed by a reception in The Majestic Hotel, Tramore. They made their home at Matthews Cross where they still live happily. We wish Noel and Nancy a very happy 60th wedding anniversary and hope they enjoy many more happy years together.

Annie comes to Town

I received reports of a little red-haired orphan wandering around Ballyduff but please don’t panic as this is completely explainable. Ballyduff Youth Drama will take to the stage with their production of Orphan Annie from Thursday February 19th to Saturday February 21st at 7.30pm in Ballyduff Community Centre. Tickets cost just €10 and are available by ringing or texting Eleanor on 087-4046904. This drama group always put on a great show to the delight of their audiences so get your ticket fast.
Ballyduff Youth Drama group is run by three local ladies Helen Millea, Eleanor Foley and Joan Cheasty. These ladies volunteer their time each year to put on a fantastic show for our entertainment. The young people of 5th and 6th classes look forward for their chance to take part in this show. It is wonderful to see these young people grow in confidence and creating new friendships

Night for Dod

Dermot (Dod) Whelan is probably one of the most well-known names in our area. Our community is most certainly a poorer place following his death. Dod was always helping others in any way he could and now his daughters Shanice and Chloe would like to keep that tradition going. They will host a night of live music, food, a raffle and an auction to raise much needed funds for the Bone Marrow for Leukaemia Trust. The night will take place on Saturday February 21st at 6.30pm in O Donnachas Bar, Kilmeaden. All donations will go straight to the fund and if you are unable to attend there is a QR code to scan with your donation.

Recent Death

Our community was united in grief following the death of Mary Daly, The Sweep, Kilmeaden. Mary was very popular with young and old and loved to be in the company of others. She was a lady of great style and had a very keen eye for fashion. She really enjoyed spending time with her family and many friends. She was very proud of her sons Eamonn, Donal and Kevin, daughter Grace, grandchildren Cathal, Gavin and Ruth and loved to talk about them. She will be sorely missed by all her family and her many friends, and we extend our deepest condolences to them all. Mary’s funeral mass was celebrated by Fr. Francis Xavier, Fr. Michael Enright and Fr. Michael O Byrne and following mass Mary was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery. We draw some comfort in the fact that she is now reunited with her beloved husband Pakie and son Pádraig, and we pray that they all now enjoy the peace and light of Christ

Community Alert

The group held their AGM on February 4th at 8pm in Ballyduff Community Centre and they were delighted to see so many people attend. The annual €10 text alert fee was collected at the meeting and anyone who was unable to attend is asked to pay the fee asap so that the list of names can be updated. Our community alert group are a very important group in our area, and the text alert scheme is invaluable and has helped on numerous occasions to apprehend those involved in a crime. It alerts people of crime in other areas so that we are aware of suspicious vehicles or activities. Please spread the word about this text alert scheme to your friends and neighbours as together we are stronger. To renew your subscription or to join the scheme please contact any of the following Jay Dowdall, Chris Pragnell or MJ Healy.
We are very lucky to have a low level of crime in our area, and this is due to having a brilliant community alert scheme which highlights any possible problems in our area. It is important that we attend our community alert meetings and give our full support to them. A drop in attendance or payment of text alert fees would be very damaging to the group. The meetings are a wonderful way to come together to discuss any worries or concerns we may have. The local Gardaí are always in attendance and there is always an interesting speaker on the night.

St. Vincent de Paul

The Society of St. Vincent De Paul is currently seeking new Home Visitation members to establish an SVP branch in the Kilmeaden Area. The SVP members provide direct support to people in need in the community who request assistance from the Society. This entails visiting people in their homes with another SVP member to offer support, guidance, and friendship. The support provided by our members can be extremely heartening for people who are struggling and can offer hope to them and their families.  For more information on what’s involved and how to apply, please contact Sinéad Wall, SVP Member Support Officer, on 086 0412328 or by email on sinead.wall@svp.ie . Full training and support will be provided.
Your time can make a difference to someone in need.
